AudioLift teaser

AudioLift turns a single portrait and an audio clip into a full-head 3D Gaussian talking avatar, with no parametric face model and no per-instance optimization. Generated multi-view videos are the intermediate representation: an audio-conditioned video model synthesizes synchronized views, and an inconsistency-robust Gaussian reconstructor lifts every frame to 3D, so the avatar can be rendered at any time from any viewpoint across the full 360° range, keeping extreme expressions and facial accessories.

Abstract

Existing 3D talking avatar methods mainly rely on parametric face models including 3DMM or FLAME, whose compact motion representations limit the models' ability to synthesize extreme expressions and to model facial accessories. We introduce AudioLift, a two-stage framework that uses generated multi-view videos as the intermediate representation for audio-driven avatar generation without parametric face models or per-instance optimization. Our framework combines a synchronized multi-view video generation stage with an inconsistency-robust Gaussian reconstruction stage to recover coherent full-head geometry from a single portrait image. Extensive experiments demonstrate that AudioLift produces 3D talking avatars capable of capturing more extreme facial expressions than existing methods, with improved geometric completeness and strong multi-view consistency across the full 360° viewing range.

Method

Two-Stage Pipeline

Stage I: audio-driven multi-view generation
Stage I: audio-driven multi-view generation. Five synchronized videos are generated from a single portrait and speech. The clean reference view conditions the denoiser, and the side and frontal views are interleaved into one token sequence where shared self-attention couples the views and promotes cross-view consistency.
Stage II: 3D Gaussian sequence reconstruction
Stage II: 3D Gaussian sequence reconstruction. A fine-tuned feed-forward reconstructor lifts the generated frames at each timestamp to a 3D Gaussian avatar. It is trained with view-aware corruption and active-volume regularization to tolerate inconsistent views, and completes unseen rear regions through conservative rear-prior distillation. The resulting Gaussian sequence can be rendered from any viewpoint at any time.

Training Data

Original source view Original source view One of the four non-anchor source views of a training scene, as captured. The anchor view is never corrupted.
Grid distortion The image is warped by a smooth random grid while the camera parameters stay as they were (shown at twice the training strength).
Camera jitter The source camera is rotated by up to 3° about its up axis and 1.5° about its right axis while the image stays unchanged.
Rear-view distillation Rear-view distillation No camera sees the back of the head, so a frozen pretrained teacher renders it from three rear viewpoints and those renders supervise the student.
We train on the NeRSemble multi-view speech dataset, captured with 16 static cameras. Because the views generated by Stage I are never perfectly consistent, we corrupt the non-anchor source views with grid distortion and camera jitter, so the reconstructor learns to tolerate that inconsistency. The back of the head, which no camera sees, is distilled from a frozen pretrained prior.

Free-Viewpoint Talking Avatars from One Portrait

In-the-wild portraits driven by real recordings at their natural length. For every subject the same Gaussian avatar sequence is rendered from the front and from a moving camera: a full turn around the head, or a sweep across the viewing range the training cameras cover. Videos autoplay muted; Audio unmutes one subject at a time.

In-the-Wild Comparisons with Prior Methods

Single portrait + real recording → talking avatar. Top row: frontal rendering. Bottom row: camera demo (coverage sweep, then the final frame is frozen and orbited 360° with a pitch nod). Baselines: Real3D-Portrait, SDTalk and NeRFFaceSpeech, driven by the same image and audio. Videos autoplay muted; Play with audio unmutes the Ours column of that row.
